Change of British High Commissioner to Australia

The Rt Hon. Baroness Valerie Amos, British high Commissioner to AustraliaThe new British High Commissioner, The Rt Hon Baroness Valerie Amos, took up her duties in Australia at the end of the October, replacing the Rt Hon Helen Liddell.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said, "The relationship between the UK and Australia is unique, and Prime Minister Rudd is an exceptional friend.  Our shared history, culture and interests make this a powerful and important partnership.  I am delighted that Valerie Amos has agreed to be our next High Commissioner to Australia.  She will bring to the role energy, flair and experience and will make an outstanding High Commissioner."

"Helen Liddell has done an excellent job and I have no doubt Valerie Amos will build on her work and continue our strong partnership with Australia", he said.

UK's biggest ever AusBio delegation brings home the business

UK stand at AusBiotech2009The UK sent its biggest ever delegation to AusBiotech this year, generating an estimated £2.5m of new business for the two years to come.

The UK delegation, organised by UK Trade & Investment and consisting of 19 companies and academics, visited AusBiotech with the aim of developing partnerships and sharing ideas and research with their Australian colleagues. The UK companies reaped the rewards of this combined approached and expect to be doing plenty of business with Australian companies in years to come.

Quentin Tannock, Chairman of Cambridge IP, one of the visiting companies, was particularly impressed by the success of his trip.

Lord Rogers talks sustainability in Sydney

The Lord Rogers of Riverside, Architect of the Millennium DomeWorld-renowned British architect The Lord Rogers spoke on 'Architecture, cities and sustainability' at a breakfast held in his honour in Sydney last week, hosted by Richard Morris, British Consul-General to NSW and Director-General of UK Trade & Investment Australasia.

Lord Rogers talked about the social aspects of architecture and the huge influence it has on people's lives and general well-being. He praised more sustainable, lower-carbon forms of transport like trains and bicycles.

Rogers is the architect of the well-known London Millennium Dome, Centre Georges Pompidou and the Lloyd's Building among many others. He is also a UK Trade & Investment Business Ambassador.

Australian children benefit from British storytelling website

Signed Stories cartoon imageChildren across Australia are benefiting from a unique storytelling website developed in the UK.

Hundreds of children are enjoying some of the best books every day in sign language, English and animation on www.signedstories.com. A spokesperson from Aussie Deaf Kids said the website is a "great initiative" for families and teachers in Australia who are "starved for this kind of resource".

Signed Stories is being viewed in classrooms in New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia where they are shared by deaf and hearing children, those with special educational needs and those learning English as a second language.

SVT receive awardSVT Engineering Consultants have weathered the economic storm in great shape and are set to continue growing, with the help of UK consulting partner, Pathfinders.

Perth-based SVT has increased turnover by 24 per cent in 08/09, despite the recession, while almost doubling the number of full-time staff in the last financial year.

London 2012 marks 1,000 days to go by lighting up London

Huge investment in UK railways

Electric train travelling through countrysideOne billion pounds has been pledged to improve two key railway routes in the United Kingdom. The government plans to electrify the main line between London and Swansea, Wales, and the route between Liverpool and Manchester will also be converted from diesel to electric.

"Sea energy could power every UK home," say experts

Offshore windmillsOffshore wind has the potential to meet more than a quarter of the United Kingdom's electricity needs, according to the Department of Energy & Climate Change. And the British Wind Energy Association believes this form of renewable energy will eventually power every home in the UK.

Speaking at an association conference, the Energy Minister, Lord Hunt, said that an extra 25 gigawatt (GW) of offshore wind energy capacity could be accommodated around the UK's shores in addition to the 8GW already built or planned. (Image by British Wind Energy Association.)
