With increasing power costs (UK electricity costs increased by 130% between 2002 and 2008 for example) and taxation/ legislation (e.g. the 2008 Climate Change Act), sustainability is rapidly becoming a source of competitive advantage. Functions managing high power usage resources, such as IT and Manufacturing, have an opportunity to demonstrate leadership within their companies.
It is estimated that a sustainability/ Green/ Eco strategy will deliver 4x the benefits of an ad-hoc approach. For IT, the challenges are substantial: changing business level behaviours within their firms and reducing ICT power consumption require a robust IT strategy and business focused approach.
